Archie Bunker’s earnestness. It becomes cartoon, like Bugs Bunny , because the TV image is so different in its structure from radio or film. Take President Nixon. He’s somewhat untakeable on TV, but quite acceptable on radio or on film. The same man, performing the same way, is quite acceptable on film and unacceptable on TV because on TV he seems too intense, too much the specialist.
